My name is Veriria, thanks for visiting my website! What would happen if a rather sedentary person finally got enough motivation to actually work out? Well, you'll find out here! I'm conducting a 30-day experiment to see how exercising approximately 8 minutes a day and eating slightly more healthy than I'm used to will effect me at the start of the new month. I'm using a book titled 28 Day Fitness Program by Thorsten Tchirner, because I know next to nothing about creating an exercise plan. Care to follow my progress? This main page is now my journal -- If you were looking for my cartoon dolls, please see the link to the right.

About Veriria

My main goal in starting to exercise is to become more healthy. My ultimate goal, after I've become more healthy and lose weight is to join the United States Marine Corps. I decided to join the military because although my job pays well, it will not take me anywhere in life. I got started on the idea by my brother, who did join the Marine Corps. I also refuse to take out ridiculously priced loans for college, hence why I am stuck with few options. I feel joining any branch of the military can only make you a better person later in life, and would be a great experience. I would chose the Marine Corps over any other branch, though, because I feel like it is the best one...And there are not too many women in it! If a woman can become a Marine, she can do anything!

Long story short: I've been "temporarily disqualified" twice by the doctors at the MEPS because I'm "overweight". When they weighed me I was 141 lbs, but they measured me at 5 foot 1-1/4 inch, when I am actually 5 foot 3 inches. I was one pound off (for a 5'1" woman). They did it to all the women each time I was down there! So I worked out with the recruiter during PT. Quite a bit I might add. The second time I went down, they measured me at 5 foot 1 inch and 143 lbs. So not only did I "gain" weight the second time, but I also apparently shrank! I called the Gunny from my recruiter's station, he called other people...I even had the Master Sergeant send for me and I got measured and weighed by him at the Marine Headquarters down in Indy -- and he measured me correctly! Still the Marines liason didn't care and I got disqualified temporarily again.

Did I mention I got a 93 on the ASVAB?

After that second time I felt quite terrible, as you might imagine. Feeling like I couldn't even get accepted by the military, I wasn't good for anything (although I didn't go to any other branches yet, I'd rather be a Marine!). So I stopped going to PT with the recruiter, just started vegging out and playing World of Warcraft with my boyfriend a lot.

Some time later, I bought a book entitled 28 Day Fitness Program by Thorsten Tschirner, along with a slew of other fitness and dieting books, in the hopes that I would start working out to become more healthy and to also lose the appropriate amount of weight to be able to join the Marine Corps.

About two weeks ago now (March 01,2007), I read an article by a man named Steve Pavlina on his website. It is called 30 Days to Success. This article was amazing! It gave me the motivation to start working out. And that book I linked above? It has been an invaluable tool in helping me work out and stay motivated. It is an excellent book for those who are sedentary (like me) and want to ease into exercising and working out each day. It gives you the exercises (and shows you how to do them) for every day, so you don't have to worry about designing your own workout program. If you are like me, you don't know or you don't know where to start on something like that: I'm no fitness expert either!

The Experiment

As stated, I shall be doing the exercises in the book 28 Day Fitness Program prescribed every day. For myself, I've added in doing 30 regular crunches and 30 reverse crunches every day (if possible). I try to do my exercises in the morning right after I've woken up, and before I've eaten anything. As of the writing of this page, I'm on day 6, and I haven't skipped a day yet. I'm quite proud of myself!

As far as food goes, I eat rather healthy already. I don't eat junk food a whole lot, and the same goes for "fast" food. The only candy I like is Twix bars and Butterfingers, and I rarely eat those as well.

Results 03/11/07

I don't think that I want to post "weekly" weigh-ins or anything like that, at least not on this 30 day experiment. I don't think that I will lose much in the weight area -- but I do think I will get a bit toned. I also think/hope that I will be more inclined to work out too!

I can safely say, however, it seems as though my stomach is a bit more flat from doing the crunches! I also noticed my biceps seem slightly bigger as well. Who says you don't see instant results from old-fashioned working out? Phht! The results may be small, but who cares? Not me!
